BEFORE YOU BEGIN YOU WILL NEED:
Ear Candles A friend to help Scissors A small spray bottle filled with water Matches or lighter Two dampened paper towels A small pillow for your head Coverlet or towel to protect the hair and skin, or you may use, a 10" Styrofoam plate with a hole 1 off center cut in the plate, large enough to put the candle through (5/8"dia). Cover the plate with foil. A second plate with foil as an auxiliary plate. Place the dampened paper towels in it.
TO BEGIN: 1. Put the Ear Candle through the plate (small end down) sticking it through about 1-1/2" to 2". With the recipient ( the person being candled) lying on their side, have them place the candle in their own ear. IMPORTANT: Helper NEVER places the candle in the recipients ear or moves the candle after it is placed in the ear, unless you are candling a child. Recipient holds the candle between the index finger and the middle finger of the hand. It is best to use the lower hand and with the palm toward the head.
2. Verbally assist the recipient to position the candle so that it is as vertical as possible. Tell the recipient that you are going to move the plate. Then very gently turn the plate until it is level or covering as much of the head as possible. You may also want to cover the rest of the head with a hand towel.
3. Now light the wick (top of the candle). When the candle ash is 1" long, cut off 1/2" of the ash. Do not cut into the blue part of the flame. The scissors should be as level as possible. Open the scissors wide and cut with the deep part of the scissors in a SLOW deliberate manner. The trimmings can be balanced on the scissors and transferred to the auxiliary plate
4. Be sure the cone end of the candle is seated snugly in the ear canal so it will draw properly. The candle needs to be vertical as it burns. If smoke comes out around the area of the ear, it may need it fit more tightly in the ear. (At the base area of candle fan with your hand and have the recipient move the candle until the proper adjustments are made, you‘ll know this when no more smoke is coming from the base of the candle.) This may be caused from several things, the candle may not be "seated" well in the ear or there may be blockages within the ear or it could be an accumulation of ear wax and other debris in the ear canal. If this happens put the candle out. (see below) Have the recipient remove the candle and tap it lightly on the side of a bowl to empty it. Then have the recipient reinsert the candle, light it and resume the process.
5. When the candle has burned down to about 1" to 1-1/2 " above the plate, have the recipient lift the burning candle with the plate from their own ear. Take the candle and plate and trim off burning section into the auxiliary plate. Check the ear to see if any debris is in the opening of the ear. Use a Q-tip to gently remove such material. NOTE: It is advisable to apply ear oil gently with a Q-tip.
6. Cut open the remaining piece of candle lengthwise with a small pair of scissors and open it to observe the contents. Concentrations may very but it is our experience that about 1/8th tsp. of wax and 1/8th tsp. of powder are actually from the burning of the candle. NOTE: It has been our experience that two or three candles in each ear is necessary for some people to get the body to begin releasing debris. Small children usually only need one in each ear. If you feel no effect from one candling in each ear, it usually indicates more candles are needed rather than it didn‘t work or your ears were clean.
